My Trip to Chicago and the Friends I Met Along the Way: La Circuit, La Chesterfields and La Cueva
Initially started in the Spring of 2000; I began conducting brief collaborations with club patrons handing out disposable cameras asking each participant to photograph and document that nights activities. Originally printed as 11x14 color photographs the piece has evolved into an assemblage comprising of multiple images printed at 4½ x 3. The nature of the image size lends itself to the travel snapshots and as a result we are presented with intimate gazes of men; snapshots of couples and friends, surrounded by deep backgrounds of colored lights and black-filled spaces within the nightclubs environment. The documentation of space and the people that make up those spaces has always been a focus in my work and so the photographs gathered here continue with those themes and locations where one might find friendship, lovers, and a new community.
